年輕的時候，我期許自己能夠成為一個專業人士、一位成功的零售業者 (professional & successful retailer)。 「專業」對於當時才20初頭的我，是一個表象加上一些實際的作為。譬如，店長一定要打領帶，但是也要能隨時捲起袖子和員工一起搬貨、上架；早上一定要提早一小時到店裏，決定當天有那些事一定要完成、有那些事要記得提醒同事、有那些事不能忘記回覆總部。

現在，我很清楚地認知，專業其實就是一種工作態度，對於工作內容要有強大的熱情、非我莫屬的責任感和正確的判斷力。

沒有熱情的責任感是一種壓力，會讓自己變得官僚、讓組織與自我都沒有前進的動力。空有熱情而沒有責任感則是一種欺騙，會讓自己變得表面、嘴上說說而已。

判斷力需要長期的學習與經驗的累積，所以公司裏會有部門，部門裡會有資深人員帶領資淺人員的傳承。在屈臣氏，對於新人與資淺的經理人，我希望他們擁有熱情與責任感，判斷力的培養則交由資深經理人去帶領；資深經理人要有正確的判斷力，但我仍希望他們擁有勇於創新、嘗試的動力，一定要想辦法維持熱情於不墜，才能永保專業。

不管你在工作崗位上多久，都要記得隨時問自己，熱情是否依然存在。

 Being Professional is a living attitude:
Great passion + strong sense of responsibility + Ability to judge

I wish myself to be a “successful and professional retailer” when I was very young. At that time, the goal is so vivid to portray a definite picture and behavior. For example, a “successful & professional” store manager must wear a tie but also ready to roll up sleeves to work hand-in-hand with store staff moving stocks around and doing shelfing. He or she must arrive store at least 1 hour earlier to make decision about what to accomplish that day, what to remind staff and what to report back to HQs.

Now I see “being professional” as an attitude to live up with. You must have “great passion”, “strong sense of responsibility” and “ability to make sound judgment”.  Passion and responsibility are two in one. Without passion, responsibility only make people bureaucratic. Without responsibility, passion is only lip service. For new hires and junior managers, I have high expectation for passion and sense of responsibility. Senior managers have the responsibility to grow greener hands to own ability to make judgment.  For senior managers, the challenge is to maintain their courage to break through while they already owns good skills making judgment.  Keep being professional is a never-stop journey.
